Ulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Scheme

Client:

Tenaga Nasional Berhad

Description of Project:

The project, undertaken for TNB Engineering and Consultancy Sdn Bhd of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, involved a review/update of an earlier feasibility study (1982/83) for a proposed power development on the upper Terengganu River, and determination of an optimal scheme for possible development by independent power producers.

The determined scheme comprises a 70m high zoned earthfill dam (6.7 million m3), 2 diversion tunnels 450m long x 10m diameter, gated spillway 23m wide with 2 radial gates, 2 concrete and steel lined pressure conduits 380m x 4.70m diameter, an underground power station with 2 x 150MW Francis turbines, a tailrace tunnel 1,220m long x 8.25m diameter, and diversion works comprising of a 28m high RCC dam (35,700 m3) and a concrete lined transfer tunnel 825m long x 3.2m diameter to divert water from an adjacent catchment. The project also includes a 2km long transmission line and 20km of access roads.
