Bakun Hydroelectric Project – Construction Management Assistance

Description of Project:
The Bakun Hydroelectric Project features a 205m high concrete faced rockfill dam with a spillway of 15,000m 3 /s design capacity, and a power intake structure for 8 power conduits connected to a surface power station housing 8 generating units with a phased ultimate capacity of 2400MW.
Implementation of the project, funded by the Government of Malaysia, is vested with Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd (the Employer). The contract for the design and construction of the main civil works, comprising dam, spillway, power intake, power tunnels, powerhouse, water release outlets, and hydraulic steel structures including associated electrical and mechanical systems was awarded in October beginning 2002.
SMEC provided specialists to form part of the Employer's (Owner's) engineering team to assist with design review, construction supervision and contract management of the main civil works and associated electrical and mechanical works.

- Review and monitoring of the contractor's construction plan, program and method
- Review and monitoring of the contractor's quality control and assurance program
- Review of design for civil works
- Review of design for electrical and mechanical works
- Review of site geology – in particular tunnelling conditions
- Monitoring of construction progress
- Monitoring of proposed construction materials and their sources.
